New Work by Ryan Purchase Premièred in the US!

The US première of the Ryan Purchase 2006 piece “Opacity No. 1″ is coming up! If you have an internet connection (and clearly you do), you can attend!

Chris Kallmyer, a graduate student trumpeter at the CalArts School of Music in Valencia, California, will be performing the work as part of his MFA Graduation recital. It is scored for flugelhorn, alto voice, and two cellos, and was commissioned by trumpeter Jeremy Maitland, who premièred the piece at McGill University in 2007. It is a serious work, reflecting the confusion and frustration associated with mental decline.

Chris’s recital is at 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 4th, and “Opacity No. 1″ is 2nd on the programme. Please remember that California is on Pacific Standard Time (GMT-8). For a lot of people, that means a start time of 9:00 or 10:00 or even 11:00 P.M. Unfortunately, CalArts does not archive their videos, so it’s live or nothing!

If you plan to (virtually) attend, you may want to check out the link now and make sure your set-up is compatible. You will need Quicktime 7, which is pretty standard – if you don’t have it, you can download it for free from the Apple website. Quicktime is available for all major operating systems: <http://www.apple.com/downloads/>
