Pianist Roger Admiral studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Western Ontario and the University of Alberta. He received his Doctor of Music degree in 1998. His main teachers include Virginia Blaha, Peter Smith and Helmut Brauss. Through Johann Strauss Foundation scholarships Roger studied Lied-duo performance at the Mozarteum (Salzburg) in summer masterclasses led by Paul Schilawsky and Charles Spencer. Roger participated in other masterclasses led by Heinz Holliger, Paul Badura-Skoda, Boris Berman, Cecile Ousset, Claude Helffer and Nelita True.
From 1990 to 1993 Roger was a founding member of a piano and percussion quartet named The Hammerhead Consort. During that time the quartet was awarded the Sir Ernest Macmillan Memorial Award and a First Prize in the CIBC National Music Competition (Brandon, 1991). Currently he is a member of the Kovalis Duo with Montréal percussionist Philip Hornsey, as well as being a member of the newly-formed East-West Quartet. Both of these chamber groups will tour Canada in 2002.
Roger’s solo piano repertoire ranges from the music of Byrd to that of the present day. In addition to organizing new music performances in Edmonton he also plays in the United States of America and in Europe. In 2000 he played four critically acclaimed recitals of Canadian and Polish contemporary music in Wroclaw, Poznan and Katowice. His CD recording of piano music written by ECCS composers, Visions of Nothingness (in memory of David Roxburgh), was released in the Spring of 2004. Other CD recordings featuring Roger Admiral include, to mention just a few, The Hammerhead Consort, Brief Confessions Brèves, Glossa, Héliosaxo and Stringtime.
