Siaw Kin Lee was born in Brunei; arrived in Canada in 1992. She completed her music studies at The University of British Columbia, where she received both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in composition. In 2002 she received a commission from The Associated Board of Royal School of Music (Publishing) Ltd (UK) to write a piano piece for a new collection of piano pieces (published in 2004). Seven Half Moon: A Song for Echo (2002) was commissioned by St Crispin’s Chamber Ensemble and Edmonton Composers’ Concert Society with funding from the Canada Council for the Arts. Vancouver Pro Musica and Symposium chamber ensemble have commissioned her to write original works for the 98 Further East Further West Concert Series and the 1999 Symposium Anniversary Concert respectively. She has also been commissioned by Vancouver School Board to arrange traditional Chinese tunes and folk songs for school choirs and string orchestra. Siaw Kin is the 3rd prize winner of New York’s STUDIO for New Music First Annual International Composers Competition (2002/03) and she is also a finalist of the 1997 Gaudeamus International Composition Competition. Her original compositions have been performed throughout North America and Europe.
