Linda J. Purves lives in Edmonton, Alberta where she is Music School Director at Mill Woods Music Ltd., a company she and her husband, guitarist Dave Brown, started in August 2005. In addition to her administrative duties with the music school and retail operation, Linda teaches piano, rudiments, harmony and history and is a popular piano adjudicator throughout Alberta.
Linda earned a diploma in composition from Grant MacEwan College in the early 1980’s and her Bachelor of Music degree in composition from McGill University in 1994. Her studies at these institutions were with composers Robert Myers, Gordon Nicholson, R. Murray Schafer, Brian Cherney, alcides lanza, Donald Steven and John Rea.
The majority of Linda’s music is written for young performers, particularly her own students. In 1992 the Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra premiered Aftermath for strings after awarding the piece first place in a composition competition the orchestra sponsored.
