David John Roxburgh was born on November 9, 1951 in Edmonton, Alberta, where he had resided most of his life. He studied science and music at the University of Alberta in the early 1970′s, returning for further training in piano and composition in 1992. In addition to numerous compositions for various chamber ensembles, he has written a body of Art Song, his specific compositional interest lying in the rhythmic and melodic relationships between music and poetry or, more simply, the status of music as poetry and poetry as music.
David Roxburgh worked as a music teacher, composer and performer. According to the composer, his most important projects were an Edmonton Composers’ Concert Society commission for the Edmonton Youth Orchestra (unfinished), a piano work written for Roger Admiral, and released by the latter on the CD Visions of Nothingness (in Memory of David Roxburgh), a work for the Alberta College Conservatory of Music Faculty Flute Quartet, and a piece for two marimbas for the percussionists of the Hammerhead Consort.
Long time member of the Edmonton Composers’ Concert Society, David Roxburgh played an important role in performing a multitude of administrative tasks as the Society’s Vice President (1999-2000) and Board member (2000-2001).
David Roxburgh passed away on June 9, 2001.
